Delta Marsh Youth Hunt - September 5 & 6, 2004

Delta hosted it's fifth annual Delta Marsh youth hunt this past weekend. Thirty-nine youth and 39 mentors came to Delta's Canadian headquarters on the north side of the marsh to enjoy an educational and fun event. Everything from gun handling and safety, clay shooting, dog handling, food preparation, recipes, boat safety, regulations, duck ID, calling, cleaning. On top of all of the instruction was the hunt itself, of course! The fields to the south of the marsh were graciously available from local landowners for the event. Between the marsh and the fields the young hunters had fantastic opportunities with a variety of ducks and geese with over 9 species in the collective bag. Some came home with limits of Canada geese while others with one green-winged teal, but all enjoyed the experience immensely, both youth and mentors alike.

The Delta Marsh shoot is one of seven organized youth hunts in Manitoba this year. The other one that was conducted this past weekend was the Netley Marsh hunt, another famous Manitoba marsh, run by shoot-master Chris Benson of the Netley Marsh Waterfowl Federation. Major supporters of the Manitoba events include SIR, Flambeau, Haydel's, Manitoba Conservation, Manitoba Wildlife Federation and Delta Waterfowl.
