Delta Waterfowl's Status of Breeding Ducks 2009

A Special Report from the Delta Waterfowl Foundation

Wetland conditions improved markedly across large areas of the U.S. Prairie Pothole Region (North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana) this year. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Spring survey shows a large increase in May ponds in the eastern Dakotas (up 117 percent from last year's dry conditions), with wetland numbers 84 percent above the long-term average. In the western Dakotas and Montana, pond counts were up 95 percent from last year and 93 percent better than the long-term average.

Traveling Waterfowlers: Preparation is the Key to 'Seamless' Trip - Begin Planning for Fall Today

Today's waterfowling culture is replete with diehards who have no inhibitions about traveling across North America to satisfy their desires to spy ducks and geese cupped and committed into their decoy spreads.

Call these hunting vagabonds traveling waterfowlers.

News Headlines...

Waterfowler Numbers Continue to Rise in Canada
For the third year in a row the sale of federal waterfowl hunting permits to Canadians has increased. In 2008 151,815 Canadians purchased federal duck stamps, a rise of more than 5,000 from 2007 and nearly 17,000 more than its low in 2005.

Ask Biologist
What are the mechanics/biomechanics which allow puddle ducks to perform a vertical takeoff?

The Potential of Canada
Excellent water levels and ample nesting cover (thanks in large part to CRP) in the Dakotas resulted in more breeding pairs of ducks being counted in the American pothole country than on the Canadian breeding grounds during the breeding population survey.
