Born for the Bay - Chessies Remain Top Dog on the Chesapeake
The Chessie family tree can be traced back to a pair of Newfoundland pups rescued from a capsized English brig off the coast of Maryland in 1807. The male, "Sailor," and the female, "Canton," went to separate owners on opposite sides of Chesapeake Bay. Each dog was crossed with native working retrievers, and the progeny became the foundation for the new breed.
From there, the genealogy of the early Chesapeake Bay retriever lineage is sketchy. But the traits and purpose of the breed was always clear. Watermen, the name given to seafaring men who made a rough living by fishing, crabbing and killing waterfowl on Chesapeake Bay, needed tough dogs — tireless animals that could handle the often brutal conditions of big water in winter.

Delta Praises Decision to Increase Funding to Breeding Grounds
Bismarck, N.D.—Delta Waterfowl applauds the recent decision by the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission (MBCC) to increase the percentage of duck stamp dollars going to the prairie breeding grounds for habitat conservation in 2012.
The commission's decision calls for an increase of the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund (MBCF) dollars for the prairie pothole states (Region 6 and Region 3). The majority of increased funding will be used for taking perpetual voluntary wetland and grassland easements, particularly in North Dakota and South Dakota, which attract the vast majority of ducks nesting annually in the United States.
