Motors

Gator-Tail MotorGator-Tail Motor

Called a shallow-water outboard, the Gator-Tail is also described as the original belt-driven surface-drive mud motor.  Standard features on the Gator-Tail are a maintenance-free belt-drive system and a sealed lower unit.  Weighing 200 pounds, this motor can propel most boats up to 35 miles per hour and will go from forward to reverse in one second.  Two designs of camouflage paint are available.  The GT 1846 is a boat, motor and trailer package with a 35-horsepower engine on an 18-foot boat pulled by a galvanized trailer.

Pro-Drive Outboards

Pro-Drive OutboardsPro-Drive Outboards are described as shallow-running motors that make possible navigating a boat through a few inches of mud and water.  The Pro-Drive are available in 25-, 27-, and 32-horsepower models with speeds from 25 to 30 miles per hour.  Each engine has an optional reverse mode based on turning the whole unit 180 degrees.  Adjustable trim is another option.  Pro-Drive also makes 16- to 20-foot boats built for the company’s motors.  A complete series of optional features are available form seats and storage boxes to bilge pumps and custom camouflage paint.

Mud Buddy Motors

Mud Buddy MotorsAmong the first to develop the long-tail mud motor, Mud Buddy was also among the first to develop the new Hyper Drive shallow-running outboard motor concept.  In two designs, the Hyper Drive Basic and the Hyper Drive Sport, there are 11 models from which to choose all with engines from 23- to 45-horsepower, belt drive, electric tilt and trim, gear change for heavy load performance, a patented bearing drive and a custom super-tough propeller.  Turning radius on the Hyper Drive is 150 to 170 degrees.  A two- year warranty is given on all engines and a one-year warranty covers the drive-train.  Mud Buddy has several styles of its own boats and other brands compatible with the company’s motors.  Blinds for all these boats are also in the Mud Buddy product line.

Go-Devil

Go-DevilAs the originator of the first long-tailed mud motor, Go-Devil has been in the boat motor and duck boat business since 1977.  Though still manufacturing the original Long Tail Mud Motor in ranges from 6.5- to 35-horsepower, the company now also markets a Surface Drive Motor with 18- to 35-horsepower ratings.  The Surface Drive has a welded steel frame, adjustable trim, belt drive and a top speed of 28 miles per hour.  Go-Devil custom-builds boats, designed specifically for the Long Tail and Surface Drive motors, with a slick bottom (no rivets or vee-crimps to catch or break) for no hang-ups when sliding over mud, grass, wood or other obstacles.  Longitudinal interior ribs ensure boat strength and stability.  Boats are available in lengths from 16 to 20 feet with built-in seats, decks and float chambers.  Custom-made grass blinds are available for most Go-Devil boats.

Blinds for Boats and Field

IWS:  Innovative Wildlife Services

IWSThe Pop Up Boat Blind, designed and manufactured by Innovative Wildlife Services, is custom-made for any type or band of duck boat.  Using a steel tubular frame covered with a rugged .500 denier Cordura nylon in a choice of several camouflage patterns, the Pop Up Boat Blind, once installed, will pop up into place in three seconds completely covering the hunter giving them protection from the weather and complete concealment from game.

When shooting time comes, the boat blind will pop open in one second to allow 360 degrees to swing a shotgun.  Also popular in the Pop Up line is the Float-N-Tote blind, a 5-foot wide, 9-foot long, 2-foot high poly-resin base compartment with a steel tubular frame Cordura nylon Pop Up top that completely covers up to four hunters.  The top pops down in one second for a 360-degree shooting opportunity.

E-Collars

Dogtra

DogtraAs one of the major manufacturers of e-collars for reinforcing lessons in basic obedience and controlling the possibly dangerous impulsive behavior of all canines, Dogtra has led the way in designing and manufacturing low-maintenance, easy-to-operate, and reliable modern remote-training tools.  All Dogtra products have durable, easy-to-activate, lightweight collar-receivers and hand-held transmitters with easy-to-manipulate and dependable controls for delivering stimulation and for operating locator-beepers.

Available in eight choices of one- or two-dog models, Dogtra collars are simply turned on with the push of a button.  The nick and constant impulses on the transmitter can be quickly and precisely calibrated from low to high with a rheostat knob-type dial adjustable by finger-feel without looking at the controls.  Stimulations are delivered and beepers are activated by easy-to-find buttons.  These features are very important when timing short or longer stimulation to reinforce positive lessons or in discouraging prospectively dangerous behavior and when using the remotely controlled beepers on those models that have this option.

The Dogtra 2000 Train and Beep Combo has been one of the company’s most popular products with 60 levels of constant and nick stimulation and a one-mile range.  The beeper, which can be remotely activated up to one-quarter mile, has a run and point mode or can be turned on and off when necessary.  Both the transmitter and the collar are waterproof.

New this year is the Dogtra 1700 NCP with an LCD screen on the transmitter that displays impulse intensity levels and battery life.  The 1700 NCP has a half-mile range, rechargeable NiMH batteries, nick and constant stimulation, and a pager/vibrator mode.

Tri-Tronics

Tri-TronicsTri-Tronics, the oldest manufacturer of e-collars, recently introduced the all-new G 2 series in several models (see the website) each featuring a compact receiver (about one-third smaller than the old style) made from Lexan (the same super strong plastic in bullet-proof products) and designed to be totally waterproof (drop it in the lake and it will still operate).

The stimulation-intensity dial and impulse-delivery buttons are simple, easy and quick to manipulate with the fingers of one hand without the need to see the dial or buttons.

The collar-receiver (also made from Lexan) has been streamlined and lightened to be one-third the size and weight of previous models.  An easy-to-remove-and-replace  battery pack and battery-life indicator are innovations in the G 2 receiver.

Also new with the G 2 is a Charging System shaped like a cradle which will hold both the transmitter and collar for a full charge in less than two hours.

Innotek

InnotekThe big news with Innotek this year is the introduction of the Field Pro Series in several models.  The Ultra Smart micro-sized Remote Trainer IUT-300 and the Ultra Smart Ergo Grip Remote Trainer IUT-1000 each feature a newly designed contoured collar that is integrated to more smoothly and comfortably fit a dog’s neck.  Each of these models have multiple stimulation levels (9 in the IUT-300 and 15 in the IUT-1000),  LCD Display, Rapid Ramp level scrolling, Boost Control training tones, a 300-yard range, and limited lifetime warranty.

Sportdog

SportdogSportdog is the newest e-collar-maker with several models offering a variety of features similar to other remote training devices on the market.  Most Sportdog e-collars have a lightweight, compact transmitter with up to 16 levels of stimulation impulses and on an easy-to-manipulate rheostat wheel and easy-to-find stimulation buttons with rugged waterproof collar-receivers weighing under 3 ounces.

More than a dozen models are available with ranges from a few hundred yards to more than a mile, replaceable rechargeable NiM4 batteries, and a limited lifetime warranty.

New this year are the Sporthunter 800 with a half-mile range, 16 levels of continuous and eight levels of momentary stimulation, a tone only button, and a low battery indicator on both the transmitter and collar-receiver.

The Wetlandhunter 800 is also new and has features similar to the Sporthunter but comes in Realtrees Advantage Max-4 Camouflage and is expandable to three dogs.  The Wetlandhunter 400, introduced this year, has the same options as the 800 but a shorter range of 400 yards and a lower price.

The Sportdog Upland 1850, Sportdog’s new version of the train and locate combination collar, will be available by this fall.

D.T. Systems

D.T. SystemsD.T. Systems e-collars run the gamut from the miniscule Ultra-E Series Models, advertised as the world’s smallest, most compact remote training tools to the Elite Super Pro Models with e-collar and beeper combinations that include nick and constant stimulation, vibration, and an anti-bark feature as well as the control system for automatic bird launchers.  All functions are displayed on an LED screen.

In between these extremes are more than a dozen other models of e-collars to serve the needs of hunters with any breed or type of gun dog.  Up to 50 levels of stimulation can be delivered up to more than a mile on the most sophisticated collars while others are for closer range canine control in the house or yard.  Most transmitters and all collars are waterproof.

New in the DT System line of products are the SPT 2400 Series and the H20 1800 Series.  Both these collars have Jump and Rise stimulation which means that each transmitter is pre-programmed to make the collar jump to a higher intensity level when the button is pressed.  The rise button will increase intensity levels as long as the button is pressed.  Both the jump and rise features make the timing of stimulation impulse much easier and more effective.

Training Tools

Dead Fowl Trainer

Dead Fowl TrainerThe Dead Fowl Trainer (DFT) has become a traditional tool for many dog trainers in search of a dummy that has the look, feel, weight, and aroma of a live gamebird, ranging from the diminutive bluewing teal to the massive Canada honker.  The idea in the design of the DFT is to encourage a dog to pick up this dummy by its soft, lifelike firm foam body instead of its hard-on-the-teeth plastic head or feet.  For any dog that likes to shake a gamebird when retrieving the loosely attached head of the DFT will automatically whack the dog’s muzzle producing a self-taught lesson not to shake a DFT – or a real duck, goose, or upland gamebird.

Mark-N-Birds

Mark-N-BirdsMark-N-Birds, made by Randy “The Flagman” Bartz, are conventional cylinder-shaped canvas or plastic dummies, injected with bottled gamebird scent, then colored half black and half white with black and white fabric streamer ribbons attached.  The result is a retrieving dummy with contrasting colors that any dog can better see in any light conditions, whether in the air or on the ground.

Likewise, the scent of these dummies makes them easier to smell on the ground and the sound of the flapping ribbons (much like the sound of bird wings) makes hearing them much more likely as they fly through the air.  This sight, scent, and sound dummy system ensures that any breed of gun dog will be more successful when doing retrieving drills during training or exercise sessions.
