Johnny Lynch Photos
In 1952, Johnny Lynch, a World War II Navy pilot and biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, wrote a paper called "Escape from Mediocrity", a humorous narrative describing the annual ritual used to set duck seasons. Although it was never published in a scientific journal, Lynch's work is arguably the best known and most read waterfowl paper ever written.
"Escape from Mediocrity" was remarkable not only for its un-scientific writing style, but also because it challenged the conventional wisdom by claiming precipitation, not harvest, is what drives duck populations.
