Taking The Kids On Their First Goose Hunt

August 23, 2012

I took my three-year-old son Ryan on his first hunt with his five-year-old sister Isabella this week. The anticipation, scouting, and ride to the field created many memories that will be cherished for a lifetime. Also along for the early season Canada goose hunt was Jon Mitzel and his five-year-old son, Gavin. This was Jon's first early goose hunt and Gavin's first hunt with his father.

The hunt couldn't have played out any better. The kids helped out from beginning to end. We saw flights of birds as we were setting up decoys and managed to have a few flocks work the decoys. (continued...)

Setting Up

Carrying the Decoys

The kids wore ear protection at all times, hid in their own field blind next me, and enjoyed blowing on duck calls as the geese approached the decoy spread. Many breaks were taken during the action allowing the kids to be kids and play in wide open spaces.

Kids are very curious and there were teachable moments such as describing the parts of a freshly killed Canada goose. All the kids wanted a feather from the bird. They used them to chase each other around in the field. The laughter didn't stop with how much fun they were having.

And for the fathers on the trip? We were inspired by Ryan, Gavin and Isabella...young children sharing these great opportunities afield. Memories and all.
