Delta Waterfowl Receives National Award

Delta has been named a recipient of the prestigious Great Blue Heron Award for its outstanding efforts on behalf of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan.

The National Great Blue Heron Award is presented to plan participants whose long-term contributions result in benefits to waterfowl and other migratory bird populations. In acknowledging Delta’s efforts, Bob McLean, Canada Co-Chair of the International NAWMP Committee, says, "The Delta Waterfowl Foundation’s scientific basis and professional expertise have played an instrumental role in the North American Waterfowl Management Plan at the regional and continental level. The Foundation is a predominant contributor to NAWMP’s ongoing success."

Delta will receive a hand carved Great Blue Heron to display.

"Delta is proud to receive this award, recognizing its numerous efforts to ensure the future of abundant waterfowl populations" says Delta Waterfowl President Jonathan Scarth. "Through our various student projects and advocacy roles, Delta strives to maximize the benefits of its efforts."

On top of Delta’s research and policy efforts, Delta is also involved directly in habitat protection and enhancement. Delta’s Adopt A Pothole program, now in its eleventh year, is a part of the NAWMP, and focuses on the Prairie Pothole Region, where the majority of the North America’s waterfowl are produced.

Jim Fisher, Delta’s director of field operations, has worked on the pothole program since its inception. "We are proud of the accomplishments of the Adopt A Pothole program as it continues to form positive relations between the landowners who own the duck factory and those most interested in ducks," says Fisher. "The NAWMP is the main funding partner that allows us to protect habitat on both sides of the border. Receiving the award is great recognition of the long-standing partnership that exists between Delta and the many entities involved with the delivery of the NAWMP."
