Partner Spotlight: Remington
Industry leader in Shotguns, Ammo for Waterfowlers

RemingtonRewind nearly 200 years—to 1816.

That’s when a young Eliphalet Remington II, legend has it, believed he could build a better gun than he could buy. He set out to craft such a gun on his father's forge, located at the time in Ilion Gulch, New York.

That autumn, newly minted flintlock rifle in tow, Eliphalet entered a shooting match. Although he only finished second, his handmade rifle was a big hit. In fact, many of his competitors wanted to order the new Remington-made rifles and barrels. Before Eliphalet left the shooting field, he found himself in the gun business.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Today, the Remington Arms Company, headquartered in Madison, North Carolina, designs, produces and sells sporting goods products, including shotguns and ammunition specifically geared to waterfowl hunters. Remington, one of Delta Waterfowl’s corporate partners, is one of the nation’s oldest continuously operating gun manufacturers, and its products are sold throughout the United States and in more than 55 countries.

Remington has been an industry leader for decades, and that’s not going to change because waterfowlers know the company sells quality shotguns and other hunting-related sporting equipment at a very reasonable price,” said Delta Senior Vice President John Devney. “Delta has a great partnership with Remington, and we hope it will continue for a long, long time.”

Barry Bond, conservation sales manager for Remington, said one of the company’s main focuses is supporting conservation, hunting and youth organizations.

“Remington is committed to educating the public about the importance of wildlife conservation, hunter safety and hunter recruitment,” he said. “Right now we work with and support more than forty conservation and youth organizations, including Delta Waterfowl, and we are committed to supporting the efforts of these and other organizations through not only financial contributions, but also through product support, training and services.

For example,  Bond notes that Remington provides free Hunter Education packages for qualified “hunting, educational, or gun safety instructors and programs” in the United States. “Teaching the next generation and others how to hunt safely and ethically is something we very much support as a company, and that’s why we’re providing these hunter education resources to qualified instructors or groups. Hunters, after all, have been on the front lines of conservation from the movement’s inception decades ago.”

If you’re looking for some quality gear before the hunting season begins, consider Remington’s Model 887 Nitro Mag shotgun and its new ammunition, HyperSonic Steel.

The 3 1/2-inch pump-action shotgun is designed to handle the most extreme weather conditions a waterfowler will likely ever encounter. Remington’s ArmorLokt coating prevents rust on most exterior surfaces of the shotgun, and its new “SuperCell” recoil pad substantially reduces kick. The shotgun’s design is inspired after the venerable Model 870.

The new HyperSonic Steel, at 1700 fps, is among the fastest and most lethal steel shot on the market today. According to Remington, HyperSonic Steel “puts more pellets in the head and neck for quicker kills and fewer misses.”

Budweiser

BudweiserDelta Waterfowl would like to thank longtime corporate sponsor Budweiser for its continued support of waterfowl conservation and ethical hunting.

Budweiser sponsors Delta's "Look for the Drakes" Campaign, which uses posters and other communications materials to spread the drakes-only message to waterfowl hunters.

"Budweiser continues to be our anchor sponsor of voluntary restraint and its message of promoting ethical waterfowl hunting, and we couldn't be happier about it," said Delta Senior Vice President John Devney.

In addition, Budweiser is also helping fund conservation through its Help Budweiser Conserve the Outdoors program, which has raised nearly $9 million in more than a decade.

As part of the program, participating Anheuser-Busch wholesalers will donate a portion of each Budweiser sale (cans or bottles) made in September and October to the company's corporate conservation partners, including Delta Waterfowl.

The grant money will be used to fund important wildlife habitat projects.

Hunting Retriever Club (HRC)Hunting Retriever Club (HRC)

Delta Waterfowl and the Hunting Retriever Club (HRC) will continue its partnership in 2010 to promote waterfowl hunting, waterfowl conservation and field retriever use.

“HRC is a great organization, and they know the best conservation tool for hunters is a well-trained dog,” said Delta Waterfowl Senior Vice President John Devney.

According to HRC, its objective is to “produce the finest hunting retrievers by offering opportunities” to amateur trainers to test their dogs in realistic hunting settings.

The 25-year-old HRC is an all-volunteer organization that has 135 clubs in the U.S. and Canada. More than 300,000 hunting dogs have participated in the HRC program.

SportDOG

SportDOGSportDOG has awarded Delta Waterfowl $5,000 to assist with mallard research in northeastern North Dakota. The project will examine the birds’ post-breeding movements, habitat usage and mortality.

All totaled, the company, which specializes in e-collars, awarded $19,300 to four conservation groups as part of its annual SportDOG Conservation Fund grant program.

“Once again we received a huge variety of applications, and as always it was tough to narrow down the finalists,” said Gary Williams, SportDOG Brand’s Conservation Fund coordinator. “We're excited about being able to contribute to these types of projects that benefit wildlife for generations to come.”

Recognizing the need to support grassroots organizations that work with government and private wildlife agencies to conserve wild game populations and critical habitat, the company created the SportDOG Conservation Fund as a way to support conservation organizations and projects its customers care about.

Buck Knives

Buck KnivesA young Kansas blacksmith-apprentice named Hoyt Buck was looking for a better way to temper steel so it would hold an edge longer. His unique approach produced the first Buck Knife in 1902.
Hoyt made each knife by hand, using worn-out file blades as raw material. His handy work was greatly appreciated during World War II. After the war, Hoyt and his son, Al, moved to San Diego and set up shop as H.H. Buck & Son in 1947.

Al Buck revolutionized the knife industry in 1964 with the Model 110 Folding Hunter, a lockblade knife that made Buck Knives an industry leader.
For the second consecutive year, Buck Knives is a supporting vendor in Delta’s national events package, supplying a two-piece knife set and stand for Delta banquets.

“We’re very excited about the work we’re doing with Delta Waterfowl, because it’s good for us as a company and good for the long-term future of ducks and duck hunting,” said Bob George, national sales and marketing manage for Buck Knives.

George says Buck Knives offers several affordable knives for game-cleaning waterfowl hunters, including the popular ErgoHunter Small Game series of knives. “Its innovative design provides comfort and control for hunters needing a reliable, quality small-game blade,” he said.

Cabela's

Cabela'sCabela's, the World's Foremost Outfitter of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, was born somewhat inadvertently in 1961 when Dick Cabela came up with a plan to sell fishing flies he purchased while at a furniture show in Chicago. Upon returning home to Chappell, Nebraska, Dick ran a classified ad in the Casper, Wyoming, newspaper reading: "12 hand-tied flies for $1." It generated one response. Undaunted, Dick formulated a new plan, rewriting the ad to read "FREE Introductory offer! 5 hand tied Flies….25c Postage….Handling" and placing it in national outdoor magazines. It didn't take long for the orders to begin arriving from sportsmen and women around the country. In the interim Cabelas growth has been legendary and they have been a proud supporter of many conservation organizations. Delta Waterfowl is happy to welcome Cabela’s as a Conservation Partner.

“Cabela's is proud to sponsor Delta Waterfowl and their invaluable efforts to enhance duck production, advocate hunting and continue their world renowned research programs. Cabela's is making contributions towards these Delta projects. It's part of our commitment to preserving our hunting traditions and to the millions of fellow hunters we serve.”

The popular shotgun will be part of Delta’s banquet and events package throughout North America in 2010. The stock of each shotgun will come with Delta’s classic organizational logo—a pair of majestic canvasbacks.

The three-inch shotgun has several appealing features, including an A-grade satin walnut stock, a ventilated rib and screw-in choke tubes. All Condor models have a blued receiver with highly polished finish and machine-turned, monobloc sides.

“Stoeger makes quality, affordable shotguns for serious hunters, and we’re very happy to have the Condor in our events package,” said Delta Waterfowl Senior Vice President John Devney. “It’s a good fit for our membership.”

Log Cabin Homes Ltd

Log Cabin HomesThe log cabin of the American frontier is a far cry from the posh pads we see today.

Indeed, those old-school cabins started out merely as primitive shelters—a balm against Mother Nature’s most raw and unforgiving elements—and were built with the blood, sweat and tears of men and women who had little more than the bare necessities to put roofs over their heads.

But times have changed—big time. Those basic, hand-hewn cabins of the American frontier have undergone a dramatic transformation, thanks in large part to Original Log Cabin Homes, one of Delta Waterfowl’s newest corporate partners.

Founded by New Yorker Tom Vesce in 1987, Original Log Cabin Homes, located in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, combines tradition, ingenuity, imagination and cutting-edge technology to design and manufacture log cabins to suit any lifestyle or aesthetic sensibility.

The company’s motto is simple: manufacture the best log houses in the world. “Tom started one of the first log home companies in the 1970s, but sold out in the early 1980s and moved to North Carolina,” said Steve Brumfield, director of marketing forOriginal Log Cabin Homes, the official log home of Cabela’s. “He started up again in 1987, and we’re now selling and shipping homes worldwide, to about 80 countries.”

As part of the partnership, any Delta Waterfowl member who purchases a cabin/home from Original Log Cabin Homes, the company will give back one percent of that sale to Delta Waterfowl for its conservation programming. It’s called the Vanity Program. In addition, sometime in 2010, the partnership will include a sportsman’s sweepstakes in which a Delta Waterfowl member will have an opportunity to win an Original Log Cabin Home. Stay tuned for details.

Official Log HomeSince its inception, Original Log Cabin Homes has always had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. According to Brumfield, company employees are passionate about environmental conservation and the preservation of our natural world. In fact, respect for the environment is nothing new for Original Log Cabin Homes; it’s the ethos of the company that began by promoting smart forestry practices and overall sustainable land use through smart stewardship, which continues today.

According to Brumfield, the company’s property is recognized by the National Wildlife Federation as an official Certified Wildlife Habitat site. The routinely attracts birds, butterflies, deer, fox, numerous bird species and other wild critters. In short, the site provides a great home for wildlife.

In that tradition, the local North Carolina Delta Waterfowl chapter will help make two lakes on the company’s property (commonly called Twin Lakes) more attractive to waterfowl, by erecting wood duck boxes and mallard hen houses, designed by Delta Waterfowl. These largely predator-proof artificial nesting structures have had great success attracting ducks, while also helping to increase the local breeding population.

“We’re hoping to create a better habitat for ducks,” said Brumfield. “That’s our goal.”

Original Log Cabin Homes also has a long history of working with the Boys and Girls Scouts and other groups like the Make-A-Wish Foundation that help underprivileged children, said Brumfield.

“We try to give back as much as we can because it’s the right thing to do,” he said.

For more information about Original Log Cabin Homes and its many housing options, see www.logcabinhomes.com.

Mossberg

MossbergSince 1919, Mossberg has been an industry leader in providing hunters with reliable, well-built shotguns and other firearms at an affordable price.

In fact, many products pioneered by Mossberg over the years are now the standards by which other modern firearms are judged.

Mossberg is a valued partner of Delta Waterfowl’s mentored hunting program. Mossberg has donated materials for Delta’s mentored hunts (youth, women, university students and other adults), which are held throughout North America every year.

In addition, Delta Waterfowl’s Gun of the Year for 2009-2010—the Silver Reserve over-and-under 12 gauge—is one Mossberg’s signature “double guns” —shotguns that have the same craftsmanship and reliability of high-end models but retail for a substantially lower cost.

“It’s great to have Mossberg on board helping us with our mentored hunting program,” said Delta Senior Vice President John Devney.

“Our partnership is a good fit all the way around.”

Mossberg is also dedicated to hunter education and safety. The Mossberg Hunter Education Instructor Purchase Program is part of the company’s Friends of the Family (FOF) program. FOF’s overall philosophy is to turn the decades-old Mossberg tradition of quality, value and versatility into a powerful teaching tool.

Mossberg offers certified hunting instructors a collection of its most popular products to assist them with educating future hunters and shooting-sport enthusiasts. The program is specifically dedicated to assisting certified instructors of the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA).

Federal Premium Ammunition

Federal Premium AmmunitionTim Brandt communications specialist with Federal Premium Ammunition, remembers the day’s assignment: To learn the effectiveness of Black Cloud (unnamed at the time), the company’s promising but still largely unproven waterfowling ammunition.

“We had good results from our engineers shooting in our tunnels, but results in the field can be a little different,” said Brandt, an avid waterfowler.

After two years of research and development, Black Cloud, Federal’s signature steel waterfowl-hunting ammunition, was, in effect, born.

“We came up with a cutting-edge steel pellet and wad system that’s more lethal and has consistent patterns for an affordable price,” he said. “and we had a tremendous product that flat-out worked, and duck hunters have confirmed it.”

Minnesota-born Federal Premium Ammunition, one of Delta Waterfowl’s conservation partners, has been manufacturing shotgun shells since 1922.

Federal hasn’t forgotten about giving back, either. Ryan Bronson, the company’s conservation specialist, said Federal has always nurtured a professional culture that stresses conservation.  The goal: To develop a conservation ethic that ensured future hunting opportunities.

Federal’s partnership with Delta Waterfowl on its Hen House and mentored hunting programs is also helping secure the future of waterfowl and waterfowl hunting. “The hen house project is a great example of the science-based programs that Delta Waterfowl works on to increase waterfowl populations,” said Bronson.

Bronson says “Mentoring programs and youth hunts are the next critical step in helping attract the next generation of hunters, and Delta’s leadership in Canada and the United States gives us hope that declining duck hunter trends can be turned around.  The future of our wild places depends on it.”

Purina

PurinaThe history of the Ralston Purina Company (now the Nestle Purina PetCare Company) is a timeline of twists and turns, watershed events that shaped the St. Louis-based company into what is today: an industry leader in premium pet food.

Founded by William H. Danforth in 1894 as a horse and mule feed company, Purina cut its teeth in the dog food business in 1921, when it introduced a pellet form of dog food called Purina Dog Chow. The innovation caught on, and quickly, and soon the entire American feed industry began producing pellet-form animal food.

Purina’s work with canine nutrition extends far beyond the dish bowl, however. The venerable company has a long history of helping its customers maintain the health and over well being of their animals. That’s particularly true for the hardworking sporting breeds coveted by hunters.

Bob West, Purina’s director of breeder marketing for its sporting dog programs, is as passionate about hunting dogs as anyone you’ll ever meet. A professional trainer for 40 years, West has some practical advice for dog owners who plan on training their dogs this summer in preparation for the hunting season.

West says preseason conditioning plays a critical role in field performance. Simply put, a well-conditioned dog can endure more and is less likely to sustain an injury or succumb to heat stroke.

West, who is an avid hunter, recommends a go-slow approach to pre-season conditioning. “Start off easy with your dog and gradually build up,” he says, noting that it’s also prudent to consult a veterinarian before starting a conditioning program. “If your dog has been static after the hunting season, it’s going to take at least six to 12 weeks for that dog to get into shape. You have to be patient.”

West says mornings and evenings are the best times to train your dog during the heat of summer.

“For retrievers, swimming is always good,” he said. “Keep it fun. And don’t overload them. Help them realize their potential.”

West says hardworking dogs should be “watered” regularly throughout the day, especially when weather conditions are hot. Dogs that are not properly watered, he says, will be more stressed during a workout and can become overheated, or dehydrated. West also says exercised dogs shouldn’t be allowed to gulp water when it is hot. That can cause bloat, a potentially lethal condition in which the swelling of the stomach compresses important organs and blood vessels.

During the conditioning process, proper nutrition, West says, is hugely important. He recommends feeding “normal healthy dogs” once a day, in the afternoon or evening. And, he cautions, don’t overfeed your canine. “A dog that’s kept at its proper weight works better and lives longer on average and has less orthopedic problems,” West says. “That’s our goal as a company—giving our customers the information they need to keep their dogs healthy and working well.”

Final Approach

Rewind to the late 1980s.

Veteran waterfowl-hunting guide Ron Latschaw is hunkered down in a hand-dug coffin pit in eastern Washington, and the wheels in his head are spinning as a new idea slowly takes shape.

“There has to be a better way,” he tells himself.

Final ApproachA better way than rolling in the dirt and mud and being exposed to all the elements Mother Nature has to offer. A better way than having grit and grime roll down his shirt collar and settle in the small of his back, all while trying to hunt geese.

Three weeks later, Latschaw’s innovative vision to stay warm, dry, clean and concealed while goose hunting took wing: the first known incarnation of the layout blind—dubbed The Slider—was born. Born, too, was Final Approach (Latschaw officially founded the company in 1993) and its penchant for producing cutting-edge, hunter-friendly, field-tested waterfowling gear that can withstand the most inclement weather conditions.

“We spend a lot of time thinking about—and eventually testing—our products before we put them on the market,” said Mark Schaefer, marketing manager for Final Approach. “We have a group of field pros and others that we rely on and who come up with news ideas and solutions to make the waterfowling experience better and overall more enjoyable. From Ron’s (Latschaw) experience, we’ve learned that necessity is the mother of invention.”

But Final Approach’s business plan—developing innovative products for waterfowlers—transcends layout blinds and its rapidly expanding line of other waterfowling gear.

Indeed, Final Approach, one of Delta Waterfowl’s newest conservation partners, understands that sound conservation is good for waterfowl and waterfowl hunters as well as its long-term future.

“We wanted to be apart of Delta Waterfowl because of it long history of cutting-edge waterfowl research and because of its proven conservation programs,” said Schaefer. “It’s a comfortable fit for us because we fully support Delta’s grassroots approach to hunter advocacy and strongly believe in the principles and tenets of the organization.”

Added Schaefer: “In the end, conservation is good for everyone—waterfowlers, the public, everyone.”

For 2009, Final Approach is offering waterfowlers several new products, including decoys, gear bags, blinds and more.

The new high-definition advantage pintail and wood duck floating decoys were designed by nationally acclaimed sculptor Marty Hanson, who has been making decoys for more than 30 years. “The authenticity, rich detail and feather textures with these decoys are a testament to Marty’s skill as an artist,” said Schaefer. “They look ever bit as good as live birds. Their realism is truly amazing.”

Final Approach’s new Eliminator Cargo Blind illustrates the company’s innovative spirit. The new blind, which is waterproof, lightweight and extremely durable, has a back rest that doubles as a back pack and detachable wheels. Both features allow hunters to get in and out of the field with ease. The news blind comes in three camouflage patterns: Advantage Max-4, Mossy Oak Duck Blind and Field Brown.

“The new blind showcases our philosophy about innovation,” said Schaefer. “It’s who we are.”
