RD Takes Young Daughter on First Goose Hunt
Lesson #1: Don’t Forget the Diapers!
Armed with a blind bag of diapers, wet wipes, suckers and a few shotgun shells, Delta Waterfowl Regional Director Scott Terning took his two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Isabella, on her first goose hunt in early September.
“Words can’t describe the experience,” said Terning, a former school teacher. “It was absolutely wonderful. The hunt couldn’t have played out any better. We saw endless flights of ducks and finally had a flock of geese decoy. It was great.”
Hunting out of a field blind, Terning of Bismarck, N.D. said his daughter, who wore ear protection at all times, hid between his legs as he and his friend, Jon Madison, called geese. “She loved it; she couldn’t have been better,” said Terning, noting that the warm weather helped keep her comfortable. “She even helped pick up decoys after the hunt.”
Ever the educator, Terning used the hunt as a teachable moment: He described the parts of a freshly felled Canada goose to his daughter in the field—from its beak to its feet. “She liked that too,” he said. “She’s very curious.”
As for Isabella, she repaid her father for their morning afield with a special gift: a poopy diaper. “I changed her on the tailgate of Jon’s truck,” he said. “It wasn’t a problem at all. I was prepared.”
