West Nile Precautions (August 24, 2002)

The West Nile virus is making headlines across the United States and Canada as it continues to spread. This virus, which can be present in birds and humans, is spread by mosquitoes – a pest that is all too common in a marsh or pothole.

MosquitoDucks and other game birds are susceptible to virus. To date, the following species in the United States have been documented with the West Nile virus: Ruffed Grouse, Sandhill Crane, Dove, Wild Turkey, Mallard, Wood duck and Canada Goose.

However, as a hunter, the virus should have little impact on your favorite past time as long as a few common sense precautions are followed. Hunters should be sure to protect themselves against mosquitoes with repellent and netting. Persons handling and cleaning birds should wear gloves to prevent exposing blood to bare skin and meat should be well cooked.

For more information on the West Nile virus, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention web site at http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/q&a.htm.
