Answer:
Hi James,
When considering which direction a Wood Duck box should face, there are several major considerations. First, the nest box should be placed in a location (and direction) that allows for an unobstructed path into the box. When possible, the entrance of the structure should face away from the prevailing wind direction. If the prevailing winds in your area typically come from the west, then the entrance should face east. I have heard it mentioned that female Wood Ducks typically select their nesting location in the early morning hours. Placing your nest box so it faces east will make it more visible during that time.
Recommended heights above the water surface range from at least 4 feet to greater than 15 feet. Nest boxes should be placed at a height where they remain above water even during high water periods. Structures mounted to a metal or wood pole and placed away from the wetland shore provide the best protection against terrestrial predators.
