- Daniel Moore - Answer: Daniel, thanks for your question. The issue of choke selection is one that waterfowlers and other shotgun shooters should spend some time with. Today, waterfowl hunters use a variety of loads, non toxic materials (steel, Hevi-Shot, Tungsten, Bismuth, etc) for a wide variety of shooting conditions. My suggestion is all hunters pattern their favorite load at a variety of ranges with various chokes to come up with the perfect recipe of gun, choke and shell. All guns pattern a bit different as do shells and chokes so it is important to test each yourself to guarantee results. Also waterfowl hunters today benefit from a wide range of screw in chokes from shotgun manufactures as well as a growing number of fine aftermarket chokes as well. With a little homework hunters should be able to dial in their ducks guns for a wide variety of hunting situations!
